California police have arrested a man Saturday after he fired

Newport Beach, Calif. - California police have arrested a man Saturday after he fired more than 50 rounds in the parking lot at a busy mall in Newport Beach, Los Angeles Times reported.

Marcos Gurrola, 42, of Garden Grove, was arrested in the parking lot near Macy's department store at Fashion Island Mall shortly after allegedly firing shots at about 4:30 am, police told the Times.

More than 50 bullets from a gun were recovered at the scene, but police did not find anyone who had been injured by shots which were apparently fired either in the air or on the ground, according to the Times.

The center is crowded with holiday shoppers at the time of recording. Some stores were immediately locked down, and many buyers posted messages on Facebook and Twitter saying that they are locked inside.

The incident comes a day after the Sandy Hook Elementary shootings in Newtown, Conn., where 26 children and adults were killed after a 20-year-old Adam Lanza opened fire at the school.
