the story of shooting in a school

(CBS News) Newtown, Connecticut - One of the parents of Sandy Hook Elementary student said today that he always thought of Newton, Conn., was the safest place in America. People in Littleton, Colorado once thought the same thing about their city until the shootings at Columbine.

Thirteen years later, the wounds have not healed.

E 'was April 20, 1999. Two Columbine students came armed to the teeth in their school and opened fire. They killed 12 students and teachers before committing suicide.

Frank DeAngelis was and is the principal at Columbine High School. He said that still haunts him, and he has not recovered. When he heard about today's events, was in a state of shock.

"Now my heart has just been broken and kind of sick to be honest with you," he said.

His first thoughts were times harrowing, as the news spread.

"The thing that weighs on my mind is when the parents are waiting in the room, and students do not come to them as the other parents get their children," said De Angelis. "And I'm sure every parent to be in Connecticut today, when they heard the news does wonders if that child, their child was in that class."

Those feelings flooded back this year with shooting at the theater in Aurora, Colorado, about 20 km east of Columbine High.

"I think the question that gets asked when I do go out and talk several times is what can prevent it from happening? And the thing that I keep saying over and over again is what causes so much hatred in the hearts of people who are ready to enter elementary school to hurt or kill children? Where did it start?
